In August, we met with Tori Sarmiento, one of INSTANDA's Senior Sales Representatives, to hear about her experiences in the insurance industry.

She discusses the crescendo of conversations about embedded insurance and the need for nimble administration systems.

Tell us about yourself.

I am a Senior Sales Representative at INSTANDA. I built my career by helping executives understand their business challenges and figure out how to overcome them, adding value through successful mutual partnerships.

I was born and raised in Philadelphia and have since moved up to the New England area. I enjoy watching and playing sports with friends and family. I grew up in a household divided, Miami & Philadelphia, and consider myself lucky for the divisional separations in conferences that avoid challenging my allegiances. I also enjoy traveling to new cities within and outside of the US.


How did you get into insurance?

Oddly enough, I fell into insurance because of a familial connection. During high school, I interned at a regional insurance company where my mom oversaw the Underwriting Team. In addition to routine paper filing, I learned firsthand how important insurance is to the greater community and where it stands in the marketplace.

After my internship, I started a full-time position with Oracle where I received a best-in-class sales training. From there, I focused on digitizing back-office processes for enterprise companies across industries. Observing a multitude of verticals, I realized the massive potential and dire need to modernize the insurance industry as a whole. With ever-changing government regulations, increasing climate complexities, and higher customer demands, the opportunity to revolutionize the industry is clear and ripe for the taking.


Are there any recurring themes in your conversations with insurers?

Embedded Insurance is a topic that comes up frequently in conversations with carriers and MGAs. It has massive market potential, while also being somewhat of a "low hanging fruit". Companies are always looking to differentiate their distribution channels and improve the customer journey, and embedded insurance gives them an amazing opportunity to accomplish that.


What insurtech trend are you most excited about?

Before joining INSTANDA, I started my Insurtech journey at a hard-coded, traditional technology provider where clients had to navigate ever-increasing IT reliance and year-long implementations. The more exposure I had to the industry, I found myself gravitating towards low/no-code technology. I loved seeing business and IT teams able to work in lock step to create a best-in-class aligned organization that is agile and adaptable to market change. I truly believe low/no code systems will be the future of insurance core technology.
