For the best part of a decade, MGAs have been one of the real success stories of this industry, growing fast, bringing genuine innovation to specialist lines, and building businesses that carriers and brokers now depend on. That success was earned in a hard market, and that market is now changing.
Rates are softening across most major lines, faster in this cycle than in the last, and capacity providers have become more selective about who they back and on what terms. Delegated authority now accounts for close to 40% of Lloyd's premium, and with that scale has come a sharper, more engaged conversation about performance. The question a capacity provider asks is evolving: alongside "how are you growing?" now comes "what does your book prove?"
This is a moment that plays to the strengths MGAs are renowned for: specialist expertise, quick decisions, and a closeness to the customer that large insurers struggle to match. The best placed businesses for the years ahead are those that pair those instincts with the ability to prove their underwriting discipline, evidence it with data, and keep their cost of operating lean as they grow. These are qualities the best MGAs already have; the opportunity now is to sharpen them.
It is against that backdrop that INSTANDA is launching the MGA Peak Performance Index: a board-level way for MGAs to benchmark themselves honestly against the four foundations of peak performance, and to identify where the highest-value opportunities sit. It takes just two minutes to complete, and you can find it here.
None of this is about technology for its own sake. The right platform simply gives good people back their time and lets an MGA move at the speed of the opportunity: some in the INSTANDA community have configured and launched close to a product a week for a year. That capability is what the four foundations rest on.
The value of seeing where you stand
Most MGA leaders have a good instinct for where they're strong and where they have room to improve. What's harder, when the day-to-day is busy and the market is moving, is stepping back and getting a clear, structured picture: the kind you'd happily put in front of your board or your capacity provider.
That's what the MGA Peak Performance Index is for.
The Index is a board-level self-assessment built around four foundations that, in INSTANDA's experience of working alongside MGAs, consistently mark out the strongest performers:
- Product velocity: how quickly you can bring a product to market and iterate as the opportunity moves.
- Distribution reach: how far and quickly you can scale across partners, channels and geographies without rebuilding from scratch each time.
- Capacity confidence: how clearly your data demonstrates your performance to the people who back you.
- Operating economics: whether your cost to operate decouples from growth as you scale.
For each one, the Index sets out what aging, competitive and peak look like in practice, in plain operating terms. You place yourself honestly against each, and where you'd like to be next becomes the strategic agenda. Very few MGAs sit at peak on all four at once, and that's rather the point: the value is in seeing clearly where the biggest gains are, so you can move on them before your competitors do. Two minutes with the Index will show you where your business sits today.
Importantly, these four foundations rest on the same technology foundation. Progress on one compounds across the others rather than stacking up as separate projects. Get the foundations right and the improvements keep giving, which is exactly what you want as the market asks more of you. That pattern is one of the clearest things INSTANDA sees across its MGA community: the businesses that invest in the foundations don't just improve once, they keep pulling ahead.
Why it matters now
In a hard market, rising rates can carry a business a long way. As the market softens, the qualities that define the strongest MGAs come into sharper focus, and that plays to the advantage of those who prepare for it. The businesses pulling ahead are the ones using the moment to sharpen the foundations that matter most, so that when the cycle turns again they're in a stronger position than when it started.
For established MGAs, that means building on a business already proven in tougher underwriting terms. For newer entrants, it means understanding what good looks like from day one. Either way, an honest read on where you stand is the best possible starting point.
Join the MGAA Masterclass
INSTANDA will be exploring all of this at an MGAA masterclass, 'When Growth Is No Longer Enough: The MGA Performance Index,' on 29 September 2026, from 1 to 2pm, online.
The session is hosted by Andy Watts, Partnerships & Business Development Director at INSTANDA, joined by Michael Keating, CEO of the MGAA, who will set the scene on what a softening market means for the sector and the opportunities it creates. Andy will then walk through the four foundations, share the operating signatures that distinguish peak performers, and set out five questions worth putting to any MGA board right now.
You'll leave with a practical framework to place your MGA honestly against each foundation, and a clear view of where your highest-value opportunities sit. Nothing theoretical, and nothing that feels like a sales pitch. Just an honest, grounded conversation about what it takes to keep pushing ahead in current market conditions.
MGAA members are warmly invited to attend.
