    Back to the Future at Insurance Innovators

    On November 4-5, 2025, we joined 2,000 attendees and 200+ speakers at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London, for the Insurance Innovators Summit. As sponsors and exhibitors, we wanted to make a lasting impression—and what better way to do that than by channelling the iconic Back to the Future film? The theme perfectly captured the spirit of the event: looking ahead to the future of insurance while acknowledging the lessons and decisions of the past. With creativity, humor, and a touch of nostalgia, we showcased how our platform is helping insurers take their first steps into a smarter, AI-driven future. 

    A Themed Throwback with a Futuristic Twist 

    In true Back to the Future style, INSTANDA’s CTO, Kevin Gaut, and Technical Presales Manager, Francisco Martin, took to the stage at the end of Day 1 dressed as Marty McFly and Doc Brown, respectively. Their presentation, titled “Is Policy Administration Ready for Agentic AI? A Reality Check,” was a light-hearted yet insightful exploration of the role of AI in transforming the insurance industry. 

    The costumes weren’t just for show—they set the tone for a presentation that balanced humor with practical insights about the opportunities and challenges of leveraging AI. As Kevin (aka Marty McFly) quipped, “We’re not all riding hoverboards yet,” but the future of insurance is closer than we think. 

    The Reality Check: AI Hype vs. Practical Implementation 

    AI was a dominant theme throughout the summit, with many presentations touting its potential as a transformative force for the industry. But as we all know, even Doc Brown’s DeLorean needed a solid foundation (and a flux capacitor!) to time travel! AI in insurance is much the same; it needs to be embedded into core policy administration and claims systems—not just bolted on. 

    Kevin brought this to life with a candid yet optimistic perspective. While AI holds incredible promise, it’s not a silver bullet that can solve every challenge. Instead, it’s a tool that, when integrated well, can unlock transformative value.  

    He encouraged attendees to think of AI as their own “flux capacitor”— an innovation that can power their journey into the future. By starting small and focusing on areas where AI can deliver immediate value, insurers can build momentum and set the stage for broader transformation. 

    A Live Demo: AI in Action 

    Francisco (as Doc Brown) demonstrated how INSTANDA's no-code platform leverages embedded AI to transform policy administration. In a playful nod to Back to the Future, he created a fictional insurance policy on INSTANDA designed to cover Marty McFly’s hoverboard and flux capacitor. The demo showcased how AI within the INSTANDA platform can interact with policy information in real time, answering complex queries with ease. 

    For example, Francisco asked INSTANDA’s AI bot whether Marty’s hoverboard would be covered in a crash and if temporal disruption (time travel mishaps) was included in the policy. The AI quickly provided answers, demonstrating how embedded intelligence can streamline underwriting and enhance the customer experience.

    Kevin wrapped up the presentation with three actionable takeaways for insurers seeking to embrace AI: 

    1. Create the Right Foundation: Start with small, simple use cases that add real value to everyday work. Avoid the temptation to implement grand, standalone solutions that struggle to integrate with core systems. 
    2. Build Momentum: AI adoption is a journey, not a destination. Begin with manageable projects, learn from failures, and scale gradually. 
    3. Think Holistically: AI’s potential extends beyond individual processes or lines of business. By embedding AI across the enterprise, insurers can unlock transformative value. 

    The Future of Insurance is Here 

    The presentation wasn’t just a crowd-pleaser—it was a powerful reminder that the future of insurance isn’t just about technological advancements—it’s about rethinking how we work, innovate, and deliver real value.
