Meet Eric Cole, the Delivery Manager for INSTANDA in North America. He joined the INSTANDA team in January 2021 and, in his own words, “I get great satisfaction for a successful delivery and a happy customer.”
Let’s catch up with Eric to find out how he got into this career, why he left early retirement for INSTANDA, and learn what it takes to be successful in his role.
As the delivery manager for North America, I support all the new client implementations and work a lot with the sales team to set up demos, prepping for sales calls and help to organize what we need to do ahead of a sales call.
Photography was of great interest to me early in my life and remains a hobby for me, but I got into the insurance industry when a friend of mine recommended that I look into agency business. I ended up spending the next 10 years running my own Insurance Agency. I sold my agency and began employment at a Property and Casualty Insurance company, where I quickly moved to Claims Adjusting. Claims adjusting allowed me to fulfill our company’s commitment to make the insured whole again. I really enjoyed claims adjusting and being able to reduce their stress, as much as possible, throughout the claims process. Then in 2001, I was asked to join a claims system implementation team and that started my career in Insurance Software delivery.
Unfortunately, the company I was working for kind of ran out of clients and I was laid off. Because of that, I decided to enjoy some time off and “retire.” It was nice, because I had spent many years constantly travelling, barely being home two weeks out of the year. It was exhausting and hard to have any sort of personal life. So, I decided to retire and enjoy completing different projects for myself.
One day, I got an email from a recruiter, with the subject line saying “100% work from home.” That intrigued me because, like I said, I had traveled constantly in my previous positions and wanted to enjoy life at home. So, I responded to the recruiter and then found out that Jamie and Jason, who I previously had worked with at other companies, also work at INSTANDA. I respect both of those guys, so I reached out to them, in which they highly recommended INSTANDA and said I would be perfect for this job.
Exactly. It’s been great.
Within a few days of coming to INSTANDA, I found that my colleagues were bright, talented, ambitious, and very nice to work with. I also was surprised to find that INSTANDA places great importance on work/life balance. Something I had not found in the insurance technology industry before.
Primarily, I approach my job as a servant leader. I strive to support the delivery team by organizing their responsibilities and removing impediments as they come up. Organization and coordination skills are critical for me to be successful. I also believe kindness and empathy are a crucial part of success in any career. How we treat our teammates and customers can build or destroy trust.
“Never underestimate the complexity of other people’s lives." This goes back to kindness and empathy. All of us have some degree of a complicated life; most of which will never be known to our friends and co-workers. I believe understanding that makes us better people.
With that, we wrap up our first “Meet the Team” article and hope that this provides a little more understanding into who is INSTANDA.
